Personal:

I love to run.  Most days, it is the difference between a good day and a great day.  And on those days that aren't so good, a nice long run helps me to relax and remember what is important to me.

I'm an attorney, but frankly, I don't like most lawyers.  I don't care about money or social status.  Fortunately, I found my dream job as a prosecutor. As such, I spend most of my time in court trying to achieve a resolution that will have the best impact on our community.

I've been married to my best friend, Jennifer, since 2003.  I like to think she has made a decent man out of the boy she married.  We have 3 amazing children.  They are the joy of my life.

Mountain View Corridor Loop.  Started before 9 to avoid the heat.  Started out with an easy mile and then realized I was feeling pretty loose, so I ran hard for the next ten miles.  Managed to run an even split, which was made easier by the amount of climbing and the punishing headwind in the first half of the run.  Still, I felt strong all the way through this run.  I realized it didn't matter whether I finished in 1:23 or 1:24, so I took it easy on the last mile.

Ran the Cove Loop with Rich and Wojciech. The weather was perfect and I handled the initial climb much better than a couple of weeks ago. I started slower, it was cooler, and it helped to have some friendly competition. When we got back to the parking lot I ran with Richard Carling down to Memory Grove. I always like to see him and I really enjoy his stories.

I took my first Saturday off in a long time yesterday. It was rainy and it was a recovery week so I decided to bag it. I felt rested and the weather was much nicer today. I ran a nice even pace, around 7:15, for the first 9 miles and then I sped up and finished my run at 6:40 pace.

Well, I've been anticipating a fall during each trail run for the last couple of months.  Sooner or later it was going to happen, and today it finally did.  I clipped my toe on an "invisible branch." It was really difficult to see coming downhill.  Of course I noticed it on the way back up the hill. Fortunately, I didn't sustain any deep cuts or lacerations.  However my palms are in rough shape.  Hopefully, that won't happen again for another couple of years.

I intended to take it slow today, but I didn't stick to that plan. I thought I would run 2:08 but I finished in 1:56.  I ran the first four miles in just over 30 minutes with no real effort. Then I ran the next four miles in 29 minutes, which was a surprise since I had to run up the hill at 9000 South.  The third quarter was about 29 minutes too.

And then, I decided to see what I could do to finish the run.  My new mantra has become "willing to suffer."  I repeat this saying to myself when things become difficult.  I knocked off 30 seconds per mile for the last four miles, finishing the last quarter in just under 27 minutes.  Those final four splits were 6:31, 6:42, 6:44, and 6:49.  Maybe not the most impressive numbers, but I was sure happy.

A couple of notes.  My iPod stopped working at Mile 5 and I was much more focused on my breathing. Also, I didn't take any fluids with me.  I ate a Larabar about halfway throught the run, but that means I only needed to consume 190 calories despite expending close to 2000.  I would have expected to feel terrible, but I recovered really quickly with a protein shake and lots of food throughout the rest of the day.

Lunchtime run up City Creek Canyon.  It looked like it might rain, but the weather was perfect aside from some mild humidity.  My legs felt a whole lot better today; my left knee is still sore and my hips are tight, but nothing unusual.  Just need to survive another 40 miles over the next 4 days.

Lunchtime run up City Creek Canyon.  Stuck to the roads this week. My hands have almost completely healed since my fall last week, but I didn't want to tempt fate. I ran hard on the uphill and kept it at or below 8:00 pace for each of the first 6 miles.  On the way down my left arch caused me some trouble on the steeper hills, but once I got past those, I was fine.  I only used my watch for 10 miles and I clocked in at just over 72 minutes, so about 1:27 for 12; not to shabby, given the amount of elevation change.

Solid effort to end another great week of training.  My only goal, starting out, was to finish in 2 hours.  I ended up well under 1:54.  My knees and my hip felt great throughout the run, and I was really able to push the pace.  Now, I can relax and do some home remodeling.

I pushed the pace at the start, finishing the first 5 miles in 33 minutes, but I started to cramp up and the last 3 miles were much slower - 21:30.

I really need to get out on the track. I feel like I have reached a peak. I need to do more exercises at threshold and maximum effort. Fortunately, I have a good base to build off of.

We traveled to St. George yesterday and the temperature was near 100 degrees. I'm not an early riser, but I knew I would have to get my run in this morning. I found a couple of bike paths to get me from my sister's house to Bluff St. And then I ran up the hill. I was happy that I could keep my average pace under 8:00 all the way up. The entire run took 72 minutes which was alright. Most importantly, I beat the heat.
